Thompson Square's latest hit single "If I Didn't Have You" was created during a therapy/songwriting session on the road between Keifer and Shawna Thompson and co-writers Paul Jenkins and Jason Sellers. The ballad was born out of the loss of Shawna's father, which occurred about a month before the writing session, and Paul's grandfather. Shawna says, "Every line of that song - I mean, it’s from the heart, every single line came from a very special place."
Despite being inspired by loss, Keifer points out that the message at the heart of the song goes beyond that. He shares, "The cool thing about the song too is its present tense. One of the themes that you can take away from it is loss, but the beautiful thing about it is if you really think about it is its not about loss at all, its about the fear of loss and the ability to tell whoever that person is that you love them, how much they mean to you while they're still here."
As for the emotional video, it was an easy choice for Thompson Square to go in the direction they did since they're a married duo. Keifer admits, "It was difficult on a couple of levels to do that video like that especially seeing Shawna all beat to hell in that bed, you know? Just to think of it for a second to think if this was real, how would this go down..." He continues, "I love being able to do a video like this and show a sensitive side. Music is so multi-dimensional and I don't ever want to get to a place where we're doing the same song over again and I want the videos to reflect that too. It's not just about having fun all the time or whatever, you've got to have some realness in there too and we try to take that same theme to our shows."
Both Keifer and Shawna had to tackle some acting in the clip, but that doesn't mean they're going to leave music behind for Hollywood. Keifer tells us, "I think it’s really fun to do that, but do I want to be an actor? Not really." Shawna shares, "I think it might be fun, but I think Keifer would be better at it than me. I had it pretty easy in the video. All I had to do was lay there and act like I was in a coma [laughs]." Keifer chimes in, "You played a coma better than I've ever seen it [played]."
Thompson Square's "If I Didn't Have You" is the first single from their sophomore album Just Feels Good, which is available now.
